Photo of East Side Fire Station --- The
Neighborhood has expressed concern to
the Allentown Administration and City
Council about its practice of only staffing
one engine at the station --- A second
possible engine at the station remains
out of service.
This photo shows aN ESYC Knee High
Football team practicing at Irving Park ...
For many years the ESYC had played
football at the Dieruff practice field on E.
Tilghman Street, west of Irving Street ...
The field was built on a former sand pit ...
During the past 2003 season the
Allentown School District suspended
ESYC play on the practice field for safety
reasons ... It is not known at this time
whether ESYC will construct a new field
on Allentown State Hospital property or
have a field constructed at Keck Park.
Walp's Restaurant --- a long-time East
Side tradition is no more ... The fine
Pennsylvania Dutch Dining has been
replaced with a WAWA's.
Members of the former Western Electric
aka AT & T aka Lucent aka Agere
Technology Pioner Group assist the
neighborhood organization in placing a
slide provided by the City on the Irving
Park playground ...Because of new
regulations on Playground safety, this
slide was replaced by another slide ... The
Jungle Jim in the background was
purchased with funds from the Gruber
Fund administered by the Allentown
School District ... The Gruber Fund is
intended to be used in East Allentown
The Allentown State Hospital has been
targeted by the City for economic
development projects ... We are not sure
whether this is good thing or whether it
will happen ... The open space on the
property serves as a counter point to the
preserved South Mountain lands across
the river...ESYC had wanted to use some
of this open space of the Allentown State
Hospital to establish football and
baseball fields for its program ... This
desire resulted in a meeting arranged by
REACH to debate the issue ... Currently
the Donley Campus for a Head Start
Program is located in building which were
one used by the Allentown State
Hospital... A number of years ago there
was controversy by neighbors who now
form Charlottes Neighborhood about
Housing for ex-patients on the perimeter
of the property.
We call this picture the dance of the
aerials --- Those who operate the
International Space Station's robotic arm
would be proud of these guys.
Bruce Marsh --- A former City of Allentown
Parks Maintenance worker is shown
doing his former duties at Keck Park ---
Keck Park built on the site of a former
landfill was opened with fanfare by former
Mayor Bartholemew in 1969 ... Has fell on
hard times ... Its swimming pool has
closed and its bathhouse will be
renovated for the operations of Mosser
Village, a social agency dedicated to
aiding children ... Mosser Village has
conducted recreational programs in the
summer, nightime basketball ...
Subsidence caused the City of Allentown
to redo some baseball fields under
community pressure ... However
controversy arose when the City of
Allentown dumped waste from City road
projects to level some natural drop-off
meadows
